Music is a vital part of the fabric of faith here at St. Andrew’s.
Music Director/Organist Shelagh Tyreman attended the University of Toronto where she completed her Bachelor of Music Performance (Honours) as well as a Diploma in Operatic Performance. She also has a Diploma in Music Performance (Honours) from Mount Royal College, Calgary. Shelagh’s vocal expertise combined with her many years of choral experience make St. Andrew’s choirs a great place to learn some fabulous vocal technique. More importantly, Shelagh feels called to St. Andrew’s where music, in all its forms, is an expression of our deep faith.
Senior Choir practices 8:00 – 10:00 pm on Thursdays and sings weekly in the services from September to June. It is open to anyone from Grade 9 and up who loves to sing; reading music is not required, although it helps! We often are accompanied by Leap of Faith, piano, organ, and various instrumental combinations. In 2006 the Senior Choir and Leap of Faith went on a mission trip to England, where they sang in Lincoln Cathedral, and raised funds through concerts for various mission projects.
Leap of Faith is our gospel band, and is open to ANYONE who plays ANY instrument. Practice is 7:00 – 8:00 pm on Thursdays and the band plays in the service once a month. They creatively arrange parts for the instruments, so that everyone gets to play. They currently have trumpet, trombone, tenor sax, alto sax, bass guitar, electric guitar, keyboard, piano, congas, percussion, violin, and clarinet in the band, and always need drummers, as well as any other instruments, as often there is more than one part for each of the instruments.
Junior Choir practices 7:00 – 7:30 pm on Wednesdays, and sings in the services once a month. It is open to all children up to twelve years of age. They play music games, learn about rhythm, melody, and other parts of music. They sing intervals using “Do re mi’s”, and reinforce musical ideas by playing coloured hand bells. They learn songs that highlight different aspects of Christianity and have a lot of fun!
